This world renowned café restaurant near the Opera Garnier has a long history, gorgeous interiors and a prime location. At The Chess Hotel we appreciate the finer things in life, and this Parisian institution certainly belongs in this category.

Second Empire elegance and gastronomic perfection

Located on the corner of the Boulevard des Capucines and the Place de l’Opera, within the Intercontinental Paris Le Grand Hotel, can be found the Second Empire elegance of the Café de la Paix. Opened in 1862, and originally called the Grand Hotel de la Paix, this magnificent building was designed by the architect Alfred Armand in accordance with the prevalent style of the time. In part due to its superb location, the Café de la Paix became a popular and fashionable gathering place. Among those who could be seen there at one time or another were Emile Zola, Guy de Maupassant, Tchaikovsky, Oscar Wilde, Edward VII when he was the Prince Of Wales, Josephine Baker and Marlene Dietrich. The Café de la Paix was declared an historic monument by the French government in 1975.

This Parisian landmark was renovated in 2003 to fully restore the original ambience. From the stucco ceiling to the sumptuous gilding and the superb furniture it offers a dining experience like no other. In summer you can sit on the terrace facing the flamboyance of the Opera Garnier, and reflect on the history of this most notable of Paris cafes.
