A Parisian gem: the Place Vendôme
Your Chess Hotel opens its doors on one of the most elegant districts of Paris. A few steps from the Palais Royal and its gardens, the Tuileries and the Louvre, it is also just a ten-minute walk from an emblematic square in Paris, the Place Vendôme. Let us introduce it to you.
The perfection of classical architecture
Everything is impressive about this former royal square. The regularity of the facades, the canted sides that give the impression of an octagon, the striking bronze column erected by Napoleon, and the large open space crossed by a single avenue. To impress was one of the intentions of the architect of Louis XIV, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, who designed the square. This magnificent place has something of a tormented history, however. It became the Place des Piques during the French Revolution. The Communards claimed the column was a symbol of tyranny and pulled it down a century later. Finally, it was damaged by bombing during the First World War. It was not until the 1930s that it became the temple of luxury and elegance that it remains today.
Shopping in the Place Vendome
Having played host to many fashion houses such as Paul Poiret, the Place Vendôme has become the opulent heart of the Parisian jewellery trade. The shop display windows are a real delight to browse, from Van Cleef and Arpels to Boucheron via Cartier, Chopard and Breguet. You will also find the jewellery boutiques of haute couture houses such as Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton. Place Vendôme window shopping is a visual feast of precious stones, noble metals, and unique pieces crafted by the greatest designers in the world. There’s plenty to dream about or splurge out on!
A few steps from your Chess Hotel await some of the most elegant and prestigious places in Paris. During your next stay in the City of Light, why not take the time to stroll there and admire the luxurious shop windows and the beautiful architectural harmony of the Place Vendôme.
